The PC9000 at Suncor’s Fort Hills operation is the inaugural machine. As is the case with all products developed by Komatsu Germany Mining Division, valuable input from both customer and distributor will be collected as the machine is used in the field. That feedback may impact changes or modifications to future PC9000 machines.

After the PC9000’s components travelled from Düsseldorf, Germany to the Fort Hills operation in Alberta, Canada, it took Komatsu engineers and SMS Equipment technicians approximately six weeks to assemble the machine on site.

The PC9000 is suitable for a broad range of large-scale surface mining operations around the globe. It is also optimized to integrate with Autonomous Haulage Systems (AHS), with double-side loading capability for Komatsu 980E trucks.

This is the inaugural PC9000 machine. More will follow.

Once the Komatsu PC9000 is ready for commercial launch in 2026, it will be available worldwide. While the inaugural machine is now in use in Canada, the PC9000 is designed for a global audience and is suited for use in a broad range of large-scale surface mining operations with backhoe or face shovel, diesel or electric drive.

Yes! Komatsu and SMS Equipment continue to offer a range of hydraulic mining excavators and shovels including the PC7000 and PC8000. These state-of-the-art -11 models include the latest technology and Komatsu’s Tier-4, low-emission ratings.

While the PC9000 is built off the successful design of the PC8000, it is a different machine class designed to suit different customer needs. Depending on the local conditions of each site, SMS Equipment and Komatsu work closely with customers to identify which machine class is the best fit for their operation.
